Periodista, novelista y crítica británica. Formada como actriz, West contribuyó a partir de 1911 en la prensa de izquierda y alcanzó notoriedad como activista por el voto femenino. Mantuvo un romance con el novelista H.G. Wells durante diez años (1913–23). Sus novelas The Judge [El juez] (1922), The Thinking Reed [El junco piensa] (1936) y The Birds Fall Down [Los pájaros caen] (1966), recibieron menos atención que sus publicaciones sociales y culturales. Sus admirados reportajes sobre los juicios de Nuremberg fueron recopilados en A Train of Powder [Un tren de polvo] (1955). Su historia de Yugoslavia, Cordero negro, halcón gris (1942), es considerada una de las mejores obras historiográficas del s. XX. En 1946, West siguió el proceso por traición contra William Joyce en una serie de artículos periodísticos que fueron publicados posteriormente bajo el título The Meaning of Treason [El significado de la traición] (1949).
